Small Closet Solutions

Are your clothes spilling out of your closet and taking over your bedroom? If so, I have some tips to help you organize and solve your small closet woes. These small closet solutions are simple and cost effective.

First, you need to do a major clean-up. Get rid of any item(s) you don’t need, and make this a yearly habit. Take everything out and sort through what you actually wear, and get rid of things you no longer need, you can even donate unwanted items to charity. Doing this on a regular basis will help you keep your closet under control. You can also use the “replacement strategy.” When you shop, only buy the amount of clothing you are willing to give up out of your closet when you get home. If you buy two shirts and a pair of pants, you have to get rid of two shirts and a pair of pants out of your closet. Out with the old in with the new.

After you have done the clean-up you may want to consider a closet system. This often requires you remove the current system and replace with the new one. You can get closet doubler, hanging shelves, and shoe organizers. These small closet solutions are very quick fixes to a tiny space. Using these items will create more areas to keep items. For the most part, you will find that there are closet systems designed for almost every shape and sized closet. If for some reason you cannot find a closet system that fits your closet well while holding your belongings, you may need to have a custom system built for you. The best part of a custom closet system, although pricey, is that they are tailor made just for you. This means shoe boxes for exactly how many shoes you have, tie hooks, belt hooks, and even purse hooks all hung in the most accessible parts of your closet. Having a custom closet system made is by far one of the best small closet solutions to your closet problems. Some closet systems can accommodate an ironing board and iron to allow you to iron your cloths. If your closet does not allow room for this, and you do have countertop space in your closet, consider adding laminate countertops to any cabinets your closet may have. Simply place a towel over the top of the laminate and you are ready to iron.

Third, consider using bins and boxes to keep your seasonal clothing items. You can store those clothes in another space, this will free up tons of space in your closet for the items of clothing you are actually using at the moment. Sweaters and jackets are big and bulky and take up a lot of space. Make sure you label the bins so that you know what is in each one and when the season comes, you can bust them out and store the clothes for the past month.

Last, really separate your living items from collection or novelty items. If you are like the average person, chances are that you have more junk stored in your closet than you need or use. Find alternative space for your novelty items. Put your collection items in bins under your bed, in the attic or in a storage building outside. If you break down your closet to wants and needs, you will find that you have more than enough space to hold all belongings you actually need or use on a daily basis.

Using these four small closet solutions, you can create a larger more efficient closet, and get rid of the mess of an overstuffed closet. Instead of your closet spilling over into your living space, make your closet efficient without breaking the bank. In return you will find your clothes less wrinkled and easier to find, making you feel better about yourself and your living space.
